Gerry O’Reilly grew up in Dunboyne, Co. Meath, and moved to the United States in 1983 on a track scholarship to Villanova University, where he studied Economics. As one of the leading middle-distance runners of his generation, he recorded seven sub-four-minute miles, including a personal best of 3:54.6 during his junior year. He finished runner-up at the NCAA 3,000m championships on two occasions and was a six-time Big East champion. In recognition of his collegiate achievements, he was inducted into the Villanova Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009.
At the highest level of international sport, Gerry earned the rare distinction of representing Ireland at the Olympic Games, competing in the 1500m at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, an achievement that places him among an elite group of Irish athletes who have reached the pinnacle of global competition.
Professionally, Gerry is a Principal and Fund Manager at Vanguard, where he has responsibility for the daily trading and oversight of several index portfolios. He managed the Total Stock Market portfolio for 30 years until June 2025, Vanguard’s largest fund and the first mutual fund in history to reach $1 trillion in assets under management.
He lives in Chester Springs, Pennsylvania. In his spare time, he enjoys cycling the rural roads of Chester County, is a Philadelphia Eagles season ticket holder, and remains an avid supporter of Meath GAA.
